Un tchequo-danoisHonestly this needs to happen. France's budget deficit is already pretty bad and it's pension system is exceptionally privileged and unsustainable.
Un croateIf not maybe start looking at giving people their money so they can save their money and retire when they want without sharing their money or taking a bigger burden for the sake of others.
Nationalité non préciséeAnd with the huge tax savings, we could deliver massive tax cuts to workers.
I don't think people appreciate how expensive the elderly are - Western societies spend a fortune, about half of Federal Government revenue, on welfare and healthcare for the elderly.
There's also clear evidence that full retirement is linked to deteriorating health, particularly in men: https://www.nber.org/papers/w12123
>"Results indicate that complete retirement leads to a 5-16 percent increase in difficulties associated with mobility and daily activities, a 5-6 percent increase in illness conditions, and 6-9 percent decline in mental health"
Having the retirement age at 70 is completely reasonable, and with a move to that age we could allow actual workers to have a much better life through lower taxes.
Non préciséThe population is aging, don't act shocked that they will probably remove the pension system entirely in the future.
Want to retire younger? have more kids, that simple. Even immigration isn't enough.
What governments need to do is increase incentives for having children. (less taxes, more child benefits, etc)
EstonienGovernment controlled retirement is a crutch anyway. The time of factory worker-drones is over. If you want to retire at a certain age you need to prepare for it yourself.
HollandaisI often do not get why these other countries strike so much and get so angry when their relative very low retirement age get’s a few years extra. In the article it says France is the lowest retirement age out of all rich countries. Even after the reform I believe they remain the lowest.
I recall Greece also went so mad about it, even though they had one of the lowest of Europe! And then wonder why these countries aren’t doing well financially.
In The Netherlands, the retirement age that is being looked at is around 70 because it is dependent on the life expectancy. That sucks, but otherwise we would have to pay more taxes to support the growing population of elderly. As people live longer, the costs to support elderly grows.
